ABSTRACT

Today, radio is in strong competition with the Internet, but when one scrolls through the FM band of an old-fashioned transistor, the white noise it emits is still punctuated by voices and music from radio stations sounding through and they still allow people to get to know new places - or old places anew. Confidences is aired on Beur FM and Libre Antenne on Europe1. Both stations broadcast in French, on the FM band, and throughout the entire republic - and beyond via the Internet. Both programmes are broadcast five nights a week, Confidences from 10pm until 1am, and Libre Antenne from 11pm until 1am. In a social context, Morten Nielsen and Morten Axel Pedersen propose using the concept of distortion in order to understand the continuous production and transformation of socio-cultural phenomena. Call-in programme Confidences on Beur FM is noisy due to the technology that ensures its transmission: the listeners calling the programme and the spontaneous and talkative host.
