ABSTRACT

Volunteering within the criminal justice system in England and Wales has a long history, and its relevance continues. Magistrates, prison visitors, and special constables provide services that reduce the costs to government and therefore the public while also empowering community residents who may feel disengaged or disenfranchised. Special constables, in particular, are a very visual entity whose presence in locations where police are rarely seen can provide confidence and reassurance as well as reducing fear of crime.
