ABSTRACT

The chapters within this book have likely developed convincing support for the implementation and utilization of a volunteer program within a police organization. There are a variety of potential implementation options for using volunteers in the policing arena. These range from administrative assistance in a police facility to citizen neighborhood patrol to armed police reserves with full law enforcement authority. In addition, this book has highlighted the plethora of policies and practices in place, varying from the national guidelines in place in the United Kingdom (e.g., Special Constables) and Singapore to the state legislation that regulates police reserves in California (e.g., Los Angeles Police Department) to the local models observed in many counties and cities (e.g., New York City Police Department) across the United States.
