ABSTRACT

The Framingham Auxiliary Police was established in 1942 in order to assist the Framingham Police Department and Civil Defense Agency during World War II. The Framingham Auxiliary Police is comprised of trained volunteers who give of themselves to make Framingham a better place to live and work. It is the policy of the Framingham Police Department to provide guidance to members of the Framingham Auxiliary Police through various policies, procedures, and regulations, which have been established to direct members in the performance of their duties and responsibilities. The mission of the Framingham Auxiliary Police is to be prepared to assist the Framingham Police Department in the event of a civil or natural disaster or in the event that additional personnel are needed by the Framingham Police Department to carry out its assigned duties. The Framingham Auxiliary Police is a part of the Framingham Emergency Management Agency and is organized under the Massachusetts Civil Defense Act of 1950. As last measured in 2011, Massachusetts has 77 law enforcement agencies with volunteer police programs with approximately 1,200 auxiliary, reserve, and special officers. Of these programs, 56 agencies participated in a survey that showed 1,029 auxiliary, reserve, and special officers volunteered 124,338 hours in 2010, equating to $3.3M of services at the established volunteer rate of $26.18 per hour. 1
