ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview on resuscitation techniques for lifeguards, with an emphasis on the typical aspects that are relevant for the resuscitation of asphyxic drowning victims and the practical and organizational consequences of performing resuscitations at or near a beach. This chapter does not describe resuscitation in situations of immersion hypothermia or the consequences of cervical spine injuries. Within the global effort to reduce drowning and the concept of the chain of survival in drowning, resuscitation is less important than prevention and rescue. However, beach lifeguards should possess the skills and knowledge to be able to achieve excellent resuscitation results. The 2015 Guidelines by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) provide clear protocols for this [1–5].
