ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the development and applications of nanotechnology in biology and medicine. The combination of nanotechnology and molecular biology has led to many new discoveries for medicine and produced a new generation of nanoscale-based devices and methods for probing the cell, elucidating intimate life processes that were heretofore invisible to human inquiry, and detecting biomarkers of early signs of disease occurring at the molecular and gene levels. Several examples of nanotools developed in our laboratory are discussed to illustrate the usefulness and potential of nanotechnology in biological sensing, biomedical diagnostics, and therapy.
