ABSTRACT

Several aspects pertaining to dementia care and the environment have emerged as crucial to 'living well' with dementia rather than 'suffering from' dementia. These concepts relate to contemporary ethical care of people living with, and potentially developing, dementia. These concepts include 'dementia-friendly communities', 'aging in place', and dementia-friendly hospitals and residential and nursing homes. To design dementia-friendly dwellings and environments of the future, at different stages of dementia we need to work in collaboration with many people. When purchasing and organising accommodation for care of people with dementia, health and social care managers need to ensure the needs of residents. The Dementia Action Alliance developed a declaration to ensure that public and political commitment to improving dementia care in England is translated into action. It acknowledges that public awareness of dementia is high but that there is a lack of understanding of the condition and how it affects people.
