ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the social aspects of the assessment and treatment of dementia. It explores the social context of older people, from theoretical and professional perspectives, with particular emphasis on the changes. Perhaps the most impressive collection of research into dementia is an edited collection which draws on the extensive knowledge of researchers, practitioners and professionals as well as the experiences of users of services. On 21 September 2009, World Alzheimer’s Day, a report published by Alzheimer’s Disease International presented global figures indicating the predicted dementia ‘epidemic’. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and the Social Care Inspection published a joint Clinical Guideline on the management of dementia in 2006. In relation to people with dementia, assessment and service provision would normally take place within the context of a multidisciplinary community mental health team. The 2009 National Dementia Strategy, which is being implemented, should be very supportive of an integrated future approach to dementia.
