ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the knowledge of risk factors for dementia and emphasises the application of epidemiology and takes a global as well as developed world view. The potential reversibility of dementia is related to the underlying pathology and to the availability and application of effective treatment. Despite the methodological concerns, the study of the epidemiology of dementia is crucial. As the age distribution of the world population shifts, dementia is emerging as a major health problem. Since dementia is primarily a disease of the elderly, a clear understanding of the demographics of ageing can be used to facilitate projections of the epidemiology of dementia and allow for planning of service to meet future needs. The assessment of epidemiology of the disease provides crucial input for public health professionals in determining and allocating healthcare resources. Geographical comparison based on hospital admission is a reflection of service provision rather than prevalence of dementia.
