ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines reasons for collecting student feedback and highlights barriers to conducting such evaluation in the undergraduate medical education setting. It describes methodological and practical issues that should be considered when setting up an evaluation system. As medical training establishments implement changes to their curricula, so too must they examine the impact of such changes on their students' experience. Such an examination can include an assessment of knowledge/ skill acquisition pre- and post-reform. The chapter provides information that the institution can use internally to monitor curriculum quality and guide improvement. It also provides information that can be used externally by potential students and other stakeholders, such as accrediting or funding organisations, for quality assurance compliance. When setting up an evaluation system a decision needs to be made as to whether participation in feedback activities will be voluntary or compulsory.
