ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of measurement of physical behaviours (PB). An exciting, albeit challenging area, is further development of the use of machine learning and pattern recognition approaches to classify specific types of free-living PBs. The course of a day is made up of a series of three PBs: physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep. As well as extensive evidence that the quantity and quality of physical activity (PA) impacts health, there is accumulating evidence that too much time spent sitting, that is, sedentary behaviour, and too much or too little sleep are detrimental to health. The chapter provides links to resources and hands-on exercises that will equip the reader with the knowledge and skills to: critically evaluate evidence based on physical activity data, select the appropriate physical behaviour measurement tool for a purpose, and objectively assess physical behaviours.
