ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on organizational change and well-being from the perspective of employees. It also reviews the state of the art of how cognitive appraisals of organizational change influence employees’ well-being. The chapter focuses on the appraisals of employees’ position in the organization post change, i.e. has the change resulted in a better situation for the individual? Extending existing literature, the chapter also presents new results on how appraisals of the change process itself may influence employee outcomes. The cognitive appraisal theory of stress provides an explanation of the links between perceptions of work and well-being. National postal services are in many ways the “sick man of government agencies”. The Danish postal service is no exception. Privatization and digitalization pose tremendous challenges for postal services. Where postal workers previously would have their own postal route, these routes are now continually changing with larger geographical areas having to be covered by one mail delivery carrier.
