ABSTRACT

In this statement, the director of a state agency supporting the expansion of urban food production offered her views on the emerging urban agriculture movement in the United States. This representative quote identifies both a common characteristic of urban agriculture efforts in Brooklyn and an underlying assumption of urban agriculture’s role in addressing the contradictions of conventional agro-food: individuated, youth-focused efforts that enact market-based – specifically entrepreneurial – solutions are keys to building alternatives to conventional agro-food.
