ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter, which was originally a talk given to a conference for younger teachers at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School (London) in January 2015, is to provide an overview of Catholic education in England and Wales by focusing especially on its future. To look forward in this way is important because Catholic schools, especially those in the state sector which the great majority of our young people attend, matter so much in the life of the Church in these countries. It is because they matter so much that I think it only prudent to reflect on the threats as well as the opportunities which the future might hold for these schools.
