ABSTRACT

Succession belongs among the most discussed research topics in the family of business research. Meanwhile, the literature has been relatively silent on father-daughter succession despite the increasing academic and popular attention focused on female leadership. Based on a review of studies related to father-daughter succession published since 1988, we identified five factors that determine the success of father-daughter succession: father’s perspective, daughter’s perspective, father-daughter relationship, daughter’s competence, and environment and cultural context. We analyze the existing findings along these five factors. Despite the fact that the topic has been mentioned quite early in the family business research, the current knowledge on father-daughter succession is still relatively fragmented and lacks an overall direction. Hence, multiple opportunities for future research are suggested.
