ABSTRACT

Tertiary education in Hong Kong, as in many countries around the world, has seen massive changes in recent years. Because English is the official medium of instruction in Hong Kong higher education, a major element of the new curriculum is the provision of English, posing questions for language providers about the kind of English that we should be teaching. It provides an overview of the tertiary system and the role of English in the curriculum more broadly before going on to discuss the work of language centres and then how Centre for Applied English Studies has introduced a new approach to teaching. The curriculum reforms which have transformed the teaching of English in many tertiary institutions in Hong Kong have provided English language centres with considerable logistical and pedagogic challenges. The development of these English in the Discipline courses presented opportunities to conduct research into disciplinary literacies and build closer relationships and understandings with departments.
