ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on tertiary English education of Korean learners of English, their needs and the characteristics of English programs in Korean universities in an effort to pinpoint the problems and challenges that tertiary education in Korea confronts. It introduces the reform of a long-running college English program at one Korean university to show how an institution can implement a global standard as part of their efforts to develop their curriculum and assess their students' levels of English proficiency. Tertiary education in Korea can also be characterized as a blended learning environment with on- and offline features. The use of online materials in classes for teaching productive skills is also becoming popular. In terms of students' motivation and goals to take English classes at the university level, students in most studies placed much value on the importance of English.
