ABSTRACT

This chapter presents key development trends in the economy and entrepreneurship in Latvia and presents a case study of chocolate producer Laima. The chapter covers the period prior to 1991, while providing more in-depth insights into entrepreneurship development after 1991, when Latvia regained independence from the Soviet Union. Particular attention is paid to the export orientation of Latvian companies as well as the inflow of foreign direct capital into the country. In the context of development trends in entrepreneurship, the chapter proceeds with a case study of Laima, in particular, the company’s distinct strategies for entering the US, Russian and Asian markets during 2008–2013.
