ABSTRACT

As a principal member of the Privy Council, Lennox had numerous occasions to correspond with London’s Lord Mayor. In the summer of 1607, along with the king and Prince Henry, Lennox visited the Merchant Taylors’ Hall and became a member of this guild. He also sponsored an acting company, which bore his name. These actors primarily toured and performed outside of the city.

In July 1606 London hosted a hurriedly prepared street pageant for King Christian IV of Denmark, Queen Anne’s brother. Lennox rode with James and the Danish king through London’s streets. He had similarly participated in the great royal entry pageant of 15 March 1604, riding alongside the royal family as it processed from the Tower through London.

After his unexpected death in February 1624, Lennox’s memory lingered in John Webster’s Lord Mayor’s Show of that October, as the dramatist linked the duke with Prince Henry, both members of the Merchant Taylors, who sponsored this pageant. The Duke’s civic legacy lives on.
