ABSTRACT

In 1965 the brochure for the seminar programme at Esalen in California laid out what is perhaps the fundamental question posed by Humanistic Psychology. Friedrich was known as a significant artist and exponent of Romanticism in the 'Age of Goethe', at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Self & Society is now published by Routledge in association with the AHP, with potential to reach a far larger constituency. It remains to be seen to what extent it can reflect and encourage the further evolution of a humanistic attitude in therapy, education, medicine and other domains of relational being. Particularly now, as the challenge of worldwide migrations and ageing societies spawn an atmosphere of fear and scarcity, and herald an impending global conflict between cultures and generations, humanistic values of understanding, empathy and integration could, despite all contrary currents, encourage us to move toward integrity and wholeness.
