ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the role of intellectual capital (IC) and its related components for regional development dynamics. Then, according to a knowledge-based interpretation of territorial strategic resources, the Knoware Tree as a framework for identifying and classifying territorial IC, and the Knoware Dashboard as a framework for driving the design of potential indicators and metrics to assess territorial IC, are presented. The evaluation models of intangible resources proposed in the management literature are significant in that they are applied with the aim to identify and evaluate the resources that really define the knowledge domains of a territorial system. In fact, the Knoware Tree is proposed as a framework for the assessment of IC components at the basis of value definition and value creation dynamics of a territorial system. The concept of Knoware – characterizing its definition – denotes all those resources that are made of, and/or embody knowledge, resulting from individual or collective cognitive activities.
