ABSTRACT
This chapter will explore the importance of technology as a starting point for understanding the media industries. It will review some of the key points in the historical development of media technologies and their associated industries in the context of competing debates about the relationship between technology and society, including discussion of concepts such as technological determinism, cultural materialism, and the social shaping of technologies. The concept of convergence will also be extensively discussed as part of this chapter.
