ABSTRACT

Is there such a concept as the “democratic mind-set”? Clearly, there is a need to understand both the practical and the political nature of democracy for citizens in democratic countries internationally. If one is to assume that we are the creators of our own destiny, we have a collective responsibility. Does a democratic mind-set motivate us to address the gap of inclusion, social justice and equality? Similarly, this chapter will explore how one can identify the commencement of a democratic mind-set and discuss the complexities in encouraging this in the ever-evolving nature of higher education against the backdrop of managerialism and neoliberalism. Given that the concept of democracy can take many forms, one such method used to establish the relationship between social sciences education and democracy is inquiry-based learning.
