ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss and critically review (recent advances in) the use of the experience sampling method (ESM) for the real-time and real-world delivery of psychological interventions in mental health research. It will first outline the advantages of ESM for enhancing the effectiveness of psychological interventions under real-world conditions. The chapter will then provide a critical account of the methodological quality of existing ESM-based psychological interventions and synthesize the current evidence on their effectiveness. This will provide the context for a broader discussion of guidelines for the development, evaluation, and implementation of ESM-based interventions that will allow this relatively young field to more fully harness the potential of these interventions for improving mental health outcomes.
