ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that group includes children and young people aged 25 and younger who do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth, the sex registered on their birth certificate. It reviews knowledge on gender non-conforming children, trans youth and their experience, and explores some of the resilience and vulnerability factors that research has identified. The chapter describes the experience of families who have a trans child. It also discusses the most promising way to interact with this population segment, from a social work perspective. The chapter also explores how current knowledge about transgender youth and their families can be used to better inform social-work intervention with this specific segment of the population. It shows and illustrates some of the main issues faced by trans children and youth, and by their families, and explains how that involvement can alleviate some of the difficulties.
