ABSTRACT

In a primary classroom, Circle Time is a unique time in the week set aside to discuss good things that have happened or concerns the children may have about work or behaviour. It is also a forum for the teacher to raise issues they may wish to talk about and discuss. Circle Time makes a well-behaved class even better and makes a challenging class more manageable. However, Circle Time is not purely about behavioral management. Along with improved behaviour comes the benefit of better speaking and listening skills leading to a more articulate classroom and thus better learning across the curriculum. This chapter, with reference to the author's classroom situation, describes the purposes and organisation of Circle Time. Talking frames also help those children who have so much to say that they lose their way when talking and forget the focus of their contribution. Circle Time has a great effect on children's self-esteem.
