ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to fill that gap in the current scholarships available on women and mobile technologies. It shows how South Asian women are participating in various public discourses from the domestic realms. The chapter focuses on South Asian women; it is worth mentioning the current trend in gender and technology. It shows that advancement of technologies has facilitated the blurring of boundaries between private and public. Since the new mobile technology has made geographical boundaries less relevant, the research is not particularly based on a “locality,” city, or country, but on women from South Asia. Appropriation of “mobile” space has given tremendous opportunity to South Asian women to participate in public lives, participating in discussions and expressing their opinions in the public sphere without transgressing the physical boundary of a private space. Many respondents pointed out that mobile devices have made them better connected to the world outside of the “homes.”
