ABSTRACT

Psychopathology in the workplace can have a profound impact on public safety particularly when it involves malicious behavior in high-risk occupations such as airline pilots, police officers, air traffic controllers, or fire department personnel. Notable recent events in the airline industry, in which psychologically maladjusted individuals have intentionally acted against others in harmful and unanticipated ways, are important examples. In 1999, investigators determined that the co-pilot of an Egypt Air plane deliberately crashed into the Atlantic shortly after takeoff from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. All 217 people on board died. In 2015, a co-pilot from Germanwings (Lufthansa) Airline flight maliciously took control of the airplane and crashed it into a mountain in France killing all 150 passengers and crew on board.
