ABSTRACT

We might adduce several other cases where the magistrate has either been ignorant of, or wilfully evaded his responsibilities. In such cases, where the law is more humane than the method of carrying it out, the widest publicity is the best kindness, as affording a useful lesson for subsequent decisions. If any of these poor women to whom the magistrates have refused protection, came to their death through the violence to which. they are subjected, and from which they might have been saved, the responsibility will be a heavy one.
