ABSTRACT

The influence of these delegates became evident when on September 13th it was resolved to secure the appointment of working women as well as practical working men as assistant inspectors under the new Factory Act. The discussion was as follows:-

Mr. BIRTWISTLE (Accrington) moved -" That this meeting, seeing that the Factory and Workshops Consolidation Amendment Act has been passed and will come into operation on the 1st of January, 1879, and will entail considerable addition of labour upon the already insufficient number and over-worked factory and workshops inspectors; this meeting, therefore, in order to prevent the act becoming a dead letter, instructs the parliamentary committee to take immediate action to secure the appointment of a number of respectable and practical working men as assistant inspectors."
