ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that the study of censorship was based on the use of an interdisciplinary, plural methodology combining different theoretical perspectives and different methods of investigation. It shows that censorship interferes with the distribution of the sensible, as understood by Jacques Ranciere. The chapter tries to act over the flow of symbolic production, interdicting works that are contestatory, intriguing, denouncing, mobilising, approaching relevant social issues that find no response from organisations. The Brazilian Republic was finally proclaimed in 1889, an act with little popular participation. Furthermore, the legislation it imposed regarding the control of the means of communication was equally rigid and authoritarian. The ethical regime is the one to define the reason of the images for being, what makes them compatible with citizenship. The poetic regime is the field of representations, which allows art to be recognised in reference to the human world.
