ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to analyze the issue of how Viet Nam acquires and improves value added in its trade activities. It seeks to answer two questions in particular–whether Viet Nam is depending more on imported products to meet its export growth; and whether export growth brings about sufficient benefits to the domestic economy. The chapter provides a review of the literature on trade in value added in Viet Nam. It specifies the analytical method used to calculate the domestic value added content of exports. The chapter uses an updated version of the input–output table for Viet Nam to calculate the domestic value-added content of exports. It discusses the key findings from the analytical work with the input–output table in 2011. The chapter also discusses several recommendations as to how Viet Nam can better identify priorities and benefit from engagement in the regional production network.
