ABSTRACT

South Africa has adopted an urban refugee policy that has welcomed many refugees over the years. Refugees and asylum seekers often fall prey to xenophobia, leaving access to justice a difficult path to access. Women in particular face more adversities than men. The intersectionality of their identities as often poor women, foreign nationals and mothers draws them further from accessing justice and enjoying the rights they are entitled to. This chapter examines the difficult and complex issues faced by refugee women in South Africa, and the ways in which it might be addressed.
