ABSTRACT

The chapter provides background to the policies of the African Union towards supporting access to justice and gender equality through women’s empowerment models and social protection schemes, with a particular focus on post-conflict countries. Through case studies from four countries, Côte d’ivore, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Tanzania, we provide a review of how the African Union is integrating a gendered approach through engagement with local and international stakeholders and civil society actors to maximize the impact of its policies to eliminate discrimination and promote gender equality. The chapter makes special reference to the Dual-Strategy on gender of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Fund.
