ABSTRACT

A safe law is therefore laid down by this decision. A wife-beater has only to estimate how much" lawful correction" does not interfere "seriously" with the comfort of her life, and he is secure from even an. indictment. If he forgets discretion, and ., maims" her so as to "interfere with her earning her own living," he will be compelled to provide her a better maintenance; he may even undergo a judicial separation, but in no instance can the victim of his assaults get compensation for her past sufferings. The law may in extreme cases protect her-may even inflict an inadequate punishment upon the offender, but however free she aftenvards becomes, it will never forget that she and her tyrant were at that time "one person," or accord her damages for her sufferings.
