ABSTRACT

Combining the learner’s journey with Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey creates space for increased learner engagement and transformation in the field of education. Tales of heroism are a guide for learners to chart their own pathways. Heroic learners access flow, take risks, and work through challenges as they learn, develop self-awareness, and reach eudaimonia, a state of human flourishing. Teachers may embody the mentor archetype or creatively take on the guise of the trickster to support and challenge learners. This chapter champions the power of narrative within the transdisciplinary field of heroism science.
