ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the relevance of considering human rights in the context of conflict resolution interventions and processes, arguing that doing so can enhance the transformative potential of such efforts. It also discusses how human rights matter in the generation, manifestation, and evolution of violent conflict, highlighting insights yielded by a human rights perspective on conflict resolution. The challenges that may arise when linking human rights and conflict resolution in practice relate partly to the fact that these specialist bodies of expertise and practice represent specific ways of seeing, being, and doing in the world. Finally, challenges arise around questions of impartiality and normativity. Despite their significance for understanding and addressing destructive conflict, integrating human rights in conflict resolution is at times easier said than done. The chapter presents some practical implications of considering human rights in conflict resolution.
