ABSTRACT

This chapter explores all the alternative perceptions and interpretations of the situations related to the two Physical Education (PE) Departments. The main concern here is how the department and its work fits into the wider context of the school and how this is perceived by the heads of the two departments. The chapter argues that the work of the department and, in particular, the curriculum which is offered to its pupils is not the result of rational curriculum development over time, nor is it a response to the current trends at the frontiers of physical educational knowledge. Faced with this problem a head of a PE department can adopt one or both of two different strategies. The Head of this PE department also found that, while help from non-physical education colleagues had been forthcoming prior to the teachers' action, it had been insufficient to meet the needs and that it had declined significantly in the last three years.
