ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to integrate two ideas: the idea of 'teaching for understanding' as an educational innovation in games teaching and a concern to involve teachers in reflection about their practice of teaching. It provides a background to these ideas and then illustrates how a research project involved teachers in the monitoring of their practice through the teaching of a changing focus in games. The chapter explores some of the implications of this project for teachers, teacher educators, and those who support teachers in their endeavour to translate complex ideas into reality and make learning come alive for young people. The idea of teachers undertaking research in their own classroom is not new but only a few researchers have actively encouraged it. In addition to the research by the teachers, the project team conducted a form of second order research about the problems faced by teachers in attempting to engage in research-based teaching.
