ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book contextualizes the Canadian landscape of public education and the place of teacher education therein. It considers the history of Indigenous teacher education, a subject that precedes confederation and, even, the colonization of the lands that define Canada today. The book concentrates on one Canadian province, proceeding from east to west, following the pathway that the sun travels as it moves from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. It also considers the history of teacher education in Canada's territories (Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon). The book examines the relationship between teacher education in Canada and in international contexts and treats continuities and changes across provincial and territorial jurisdictions, projecting a forward-looking examination at the future of Canadian teacher education.
