ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines and illustrates various aspects of the relationship between education and society. It addresses issues that are likely to be of continued importance, such as parental choice, school closures, technical education, education in a multicultural society, the character of the teaching force and geographical variations in educational policy and provision. The book examines some of the consequences of some trends for the provision of education and some of the associated social issues. It demonstrates some kinds of conflict that are inevitable within existing policy-making arrangements both in England and Wales and in Scotland. Alongside research on the rapidly changing politics of educational provision, there is clearly a need for research addressing the lack of change in patterns of educational attainment. The book also offers useful pointers for such research.
