ABSTRACT
The concept of ‘Theme’ is closely linked with Halliday’s (1967, 1968, 1973, 1985, 1994) metafunctional hypothesis (especially the Textual metafunction), which is in contrast with the proposal in the Cardiff Grammar that there are eight different ‘strands of meaning’ rather than only three metafunctions.
