ABSTRACT

School teaching is often regarded as a female occupation. This chapter focuses on one job appointment in the Physical Education Department. It presents an extended case study which is intended to assist the analysis of school structure and sets of relationships among teachers at Bishop McGregor School. In Bishop McGregor School it is now common to find teachers considering the possibility of secondment, redeployment and promotion on a temporary or a permanent basis. In previous academic year 1983–4, both heads of departments had been on secondment after which the head of boys' PE had successfully obtained a further scale post of responsibility to be head of community sport. The chapter examines the pre-interview, interview and post-interview phases of Colin Burden's post. The interview for the additional scale point for an aspect of Physical Education that had become available through Roy Cooksley's secondment took place in head's office. The interview panel consisted of three school governors, Phil Barlow and an adviser.
