Augusto César Sandino, led a guerrilla army against the occupying U.S. Marines in the hills of northern Nicaragua in the late 1920s, was assassinated by Anastasio Somoza in 1934, and became the inspiration of the Sandinista Front that toppled Somoza’s son in 1979.
