ABSTRACT

Voznesenskii arrived in Port Rumiantsev on July 20, 1840, where he devoted the next 10 days exclusively to collecting botanical and ornithological material. With these Russian California materials on their way, Voznesenskii now decided to devote his attention to collecting in adjacent Mexican California. Voznesenskii arrived back at Yerba Buena on April 2; after a few days visiting, he proceeded on to Fort Ross, where he began preparing the New Helvetia materials for shipment back to Russia. Between April and August 1841, Voznesenskii returned to the exploration of New Albion, with small excursions to visit Mission San Rafael and climb to the 4,343-foot summit of Mt. St. Helena in Napa County. Although he lacked the title, the young man had essentially replaced Schroeder and assumed the latter's responsibilities for maintaining the acquisitions inventory and the technical laboratory. The extreme importance of Voznesenskii's collections and notes can to some extent be measured in terms of their scope and range.
