ABSTRACT

Our world is changing, faster than most of us can grasp. Every night we can watch an instant television replay of world history in the making. Scientists have given us the power to clone sheep and destroy whole cities. Artists use canvas and cameras to make sense of a constant stream of violence and sex. With so many changes in our society, museums can't always take the safe road in what they present to the public. Our world today is filled with emotional minefields of controversy. Some of us who work in museums relish the idea of looking at the social implications of science, history, and art. Others cringe and want to hide under their desks. There was so much protest from the community over the official's comment that every middle school and high school class was required to see the exhibit and take a minicourse on how the immune system works.
