ABSTRACT

When the word ‘eugenics’ is mentioned, many people associate it with Nazis and 1940s Germany, if they understand the word in the first place. Few people within the general public are aware that the concept of eugenics has been around much longer—and was not isolated to World War II Germany. Eugenics is not just a past issue; it is the center of much political, philosophical, and religious discourse in the United States. This paper briefly covers the history of American eugenics and what museums are doing to provide information on the topic.
