ABSTRACT

Periodization is used as a tool in historical research and analysis. There are several possible approaches regarding periodization for the late Ottoman period in Palestine. These may be selected from the viewpoint of either Ottoman rule and reform, the Eurocentric position, which stresses the impact of the West and Westernization, the Judeo-Palestino-Centric and later Zionist angles, or more recently the Arab-Palestino-Centric angles with special focus on the inception and growth of the Palestinian national movement. In each, we may create periodizations for sub-categories of political events (e.g. wars, regime change), certain populations, or waves of immigration and settlement (the Hassidic* Aliyah (immigration wave) of the Jews for example in 1777, the Aliyah from North Africa in 1830, or the Lovers of Zion Aliyah in 1882 unjustifiably entitled “The First Aliyah”, and the same for Arab or other sub-groups such as the wave of immigration from Egypt in the 1820s and 1830s, or the interrelations between the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and the Community in the 19th and 20th centuries).
