ABSTRACT

The Humane Slaughter Act (HSA) addresses the death of cows and other animals and Death is only one among other changes in the life of a beef cow. Another important change is that of calf to adult cow. In a capitalist economy, the most important part of this change is that of small cow to large cow, less cow to more cow. 'Among the HSA's most important provisions is the requirement that all animals rendered unconscious with one application of an effective stunning device by trained person before being shackled and hoisted up on the line'. The Humane Society secretly inspected numerous auctions and slaughterhouses where they find that downed dairy cows 'too frail to walk may be dragged to their death or left suffering for hours'. Historically in the United States, the slaughter houses made most of the money to be in beef. This is true even though the slaughter houses merely one stage in the production of meat.
