ABSTRACT

This chapter is a much expanded and updated version of part of a paper completed in early 1986 (Lyman and Ross 1988). Comparison of that paper with this chapter, the final revisions of which were completed in late 1989, would demonstrate little has changed in the intervening years. Between January 1,1986 and January 1, 1989, at least four sites were sampled (CLT13, CLT47, CS43c, LNC62), reports on seven sites were produced (CS43c, CS45, D083 [this volume], DO130, LNC14, LNC60, LNC62), and I discovered that one site tested in 1979 had also been sampled in the early 1960s (CS11), and that several sites had been tested in the 1930s and one site (CS88) had been tested in 1981 that had not been considered by Lyman and Ross (1988). These new data are included in this updated history. As well, I decided to include here several sites not considered in the earlier history. These additional sites include some sampled by amateurs (Kilchis Point, Chishucks, Sand Lake) and the early professionals (Schumacher—CU40; Collins—Til; Berreman—CU20, CU28, CU33, CU35). By incorporating these additions and changes into the critical history, some of the statistics presented in Lyman and Ross (1988) change; the new values are reported here. This history, then, contains data from all sites I know to have been sampled during the last half of the 19th century, and between the beginning of this century and January 1, 1989.
